Venue: Don Bosco College, Golaghat
Occasion: World Mental Health Day 2026
Introduction
The Department of Sociology and the Department of Education, in collaboration with the NSS Unit of Don Bosco College, Golaghat, observed World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2026 with the objective of creating awareness about the importance of mental health and emotional well-being among students. The programme aimed to encourage open discussions on mental health, reduce social stigma associated with mental health issues, and sensitise students towards the need for a supportive and inclusive environment within educational institutions.
Proceedings of the Programme
The programme featured a mime act presented by the NSS volunteers, highlighting the significance of mental health and the emotional challenges faced by individuals in their everyday lives. Through their performance, the volunteers conveyed the importance of empathy, understanding, emotional support, and seeking help whenever necessary. The presentation effectively communicated the message that mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health.
This was followed by an informative talk delivered by Ms. Daisy Gogoi, Head of the Department of Education, on “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” who highlighted the importance of maintaining mental and emotional well-being, particularly among students. She emphasised that academic pressure, social expectations, personal challenges, and changing lifestyles can affect the mental health of young people. She also stressed the role of educational institutions, teachers, and peer groups in creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their concerns without fear of judgement.
As an extension of the observance, an Inter-Departmental Speech Competition was organised on 9th November 2026 to provide students with an opportunity to express their views and perspectives on mental health-related issues. The competition encouraged critical thinking, awareness, and meaningful discussion among students from different departments.
Address by the Principal
The programme concluded with an address by the Principal Dr. Fr. Amaladossof the college, who summarised the key messages conveyed through the various activities. In his valuable remarks, he emphasised that mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being and should not be neglected. He encouraged students to develop a positive outlook, maintain healthy relationships, support one another, and seek guidance whenever they encounter emotional or psychological difficulties. He also highlighted the collective responsibility of educational institutions in promoting mental health awareness and fostering a caring and supportive campus environment.
Outcome and Conclusion
The observance of World Mental Health Day 2026 provided a meaningful platform for students to understand the importance of mental health and its connection with academic performance, personal development, and social relationships. The mime act, awareness talk, and inter-departmental speech competition collectively contributed to sensitising students and encouraging them to approach mental health with greater openness and understanding.
The programme reinforced the message that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being and that creating a mentally healthy society requires awareness, empathy, acceptance, and collective responsibility.
